Mexico then named a metro station in Mexico City called Metro Etiopía. Mexico re-opened its embassy in Addis Ababa in 2007. Ethiopia is represented in Mexico through its embassy in Washington DC. It also has an honorary consulate in Mexico City.

The first African country to establish formal relations with Mexico was Ethiopia in the 1930s and 1940s. Thanks to that, a number of young Ethiopians had the opportunity to study medicine in Mexico under the auspices of cultural cooperation agreements.

In the last two years Ethiopia have approached Mexico to find out about its experience in implementing social development policies and the fight against poverty. Mexico signed a memorandum of understanding between its diplomatic academies and established mechanisms for mutual interest with Ethiopia as a legal frame-work to make a more solid political dialogue and identify concrete opportunities for cultural, academic, scientific and technical cooperation.
Mexico and Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, seeking to strengthen the relations between the friendly countries and their people. Ethiopia and the United Mexican States have established a mechanism to carry out periodic high-level consultations on subjects of mutual interest affecting their bilateral and international relations.

It was during 1935, when the Benito Mussulini's facist forces attacked Ethiopia. It was also during Lazaro Cardenas rule in Mexico who showed under him at the time, the firm stance of the nation over the defense of human rights and world peace.
Italy annihilated Ethiopia's sovereignty, declared its total victory and requested states for the formal recognition of Ethiopia as an Italian Colony. Mexico protested strongest against the invasion.
The Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I made a visit to Mexico in June 1954. Since that historic visit, between Mexico and Ethiopia, relations were established not only fiendly relationship, but as well as cultural exchanges carried out by the Ethiopian-Mexican Relation Institute.
Indeed, the relationship between Ethiopia and Mexico continued to symbolise a perfect representation of the fundamental principle of reciprocity even in times of great natural calamity and misery that affected both nations
In Addis Ababa Ethiopia thanked Mexico by naming a square in the city called "Plaza Mexico". Mexico then named a metro station in Mexico City called Metro Etiopía { though also known as Plaza de la Transparencia}. Every metro station has a symbol and that of "Plaza de Etiopia" is the lion. It symbolizes the established relations of them both.
"The visit of the last Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I to Mexico in June 1954 , in gratitude to the support received by the country to the League of Nations during the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, was marked in the historical memory of the City of Mexico with the establishment of the Ethiopian Glorieta Narvarte , where a commemorative plaque was also placed ."
On Monday, July 13th, as a token of respect and friendship, the STC (Mexico public trains system), the Consulate of Ethiopia, the Mexico City secretary of tourism, and members of the Rastafari community in Mexico revealed at its new location, the commemorative plate of the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I visit in 1954 and was greeted kindly. The plate was restored as construction was being made.
" On 19 June 1954 the Emperor Haile Selassie I is visiting Mexico and meets with Mexican leader Lazaro Cardenas."
The Engineer, Francisco Bojorquez Hernandez, head of the STC quoted: “We are very glad of remembering in this day, the arrival of the King of Kings, Haile Selassie I. And precisely this train station has the name of Ethiopia, to pay tribute to the Ethiopian community, extolling our great friendship, our great fraternity and making clear that Ethiopia and Mexico, had share and will keep sharing our history, principles and values”.
The Honorary Consul, Alberto Cabezut Mandaria said: “It is an honor for us, that this plate be relocated, in the name of Ethiopia and our Rastafari friends. Ethiopia is a millenary country, warrior and of a true heart, and through me Ethiopia thanks for your attention and support"
September 25 1985 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was suffering from economic ruin, internal war, and years of drought and disease. Inhabitants were dying and starving. Mexico donated a $5000 relief to the needy country.
Perplexing even if Ethiopia is in very much need, the Red Cross of Ethiopia donated $5000 back to Mexico to help victims of the earthquake. This was as a thank you since United States of Mexico helped Ethiopia during the invasion of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

On Friday December 7, 2007 Berhane Deressa and Hector Valezzi, Ambassador of Mexico to Ethiopia, together opened a photo exhibition at the city hall. The photograph exhibition is believed to strengthen the cultural and economic relations between people of the two countries.
Ambassador Hector Valezzi on his part stated that collaboration works like this photographic exhibition and pervious programs like music concert by Mexican band help to create cultural relation between the two nations.
